    Operation in the Musan area is the action performed in May 1939 by the main force of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army under the command of Comrade Kim Il Sung.

    In 1939, several revolutionary organizations in the northern area of Korea along with those in the Xijiandao were damaged much and other revolutionary organizations which were not damaged got timid due to the machinations of the Japanese imperialists. Furthermore the Japanese imperialists kept on false propaganda that the Korean People's Revolutionary Army had been ruined.

    Kim Il Sung called the meeting of commanding personnel of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army in Beidadingzi, Changbai County in the early April 1939 and put forward a new line to give ceaseless blows to the Japanese imperialist aggressors and advance to the homeland.

    

    After the meeting, he personally led the main force of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army to switch over to the active spring counteroffensive action and led different actions to victory dealing successive blow to the enemies and making full preparations for the advance to the homeland with his adroit and consummate guerilla tactics and art of command.

    Led by Kim Il Sung, the main force of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army advanced to the homeland on May 18, 1939 across the Amnok River through the Barrage No. 5.

    The KPRA main force that advanced to the homeland in accordance with the line put forward by Kim Il Sung at the Beidadingzi meeting marched along the “Kapsan-Musan military road,” road built by the Japanese imperialists for guarding the frontier, to reach Mupho(Musan County, North Hamgyong Province at that time), Samjiyon County, Ryanggang Province on May 21, 1939.

    Kim Il Sung called a meeting of KPRA commanders. He said that the main force of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army should advance to the Taehongdan area. To its end he put forward a task to advance to the two directions--Sinsadong and Singaechok.

    When the main force arrived near by a shrine in Taehongdan on May 22, 1939, it had a break. Kim Il Sung ordered the 7th Regiment of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army to advance towards Singaechok in accordance with the already worked out operation plan and he personally led the 8th Regiment and the guards company towards Sinsadong.

    

    He made speech, “Let us rise up vigorously in the anti-Japanese struggle to hasten the liberation of the homeland” in front of the people in Sinsadong.

    In the speech, Kim Il Sung appealed the whole nation to unite firmly in the anti-Japanese front and clarified the future task for its realization.

    The 7th Regiment which advanced to Singaechok wiped out the enemies in the area to capture great number of munitions and conducted political work among the people.

    The 8th Regiment and the guards company that advanced to Sinsadong attained the political and military purpose under the command of Kim Il Sung arrived at the vicinity of the mountain shrine, the assembly area in early morning on May 23, 1939.

    Foreseeing that the enemies would pursue the main force, Kim Il Sung ordered it to ambush itself in the favourable terrain zone in the Taehongdan Plains.

    

    Under the command of Kim Il Sung, the KPRA main force conducted a large annihilation operation against the Japanese imperialists who were pursuing the 7th Regiment on the Taehongdan Plains that day, thus emerging victorious in the operation.

    On the way toward Tuman River, the KPRA main forces dealt another blow to the enemy.

    Victory in the operation in the Musan area made under the distinguished command of Kim Il Sung demonstrated the ever-victorious might of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army, instigated the firm confidence in victory in the revolution and zeal for struggle among the people in the homeland and dealt heavy political and military blow to the Japanese imperialist aggressors.

    Along with Battle of Pochonbo, the operation in the Musan area organized and commanded by Kim Il Sung was the largest-scale action of the greatest significance in the military operations performed by the Korean People's Revolutionary Army in the homeland.

    Monument to the Victory in the Operation in the Musan Area was erected in May 1971 on the Taehongdan Tableland in order to convey long the immortal exploit of Kim Il Sung who led the operation in the Musan area to victory.

    The monument was reconstructed freshly and distinctively on May 23, 2002 as required by the times.

    However, the operation in the Musan area which Kim Il Sung organized and led to victory provide revolutionary confidence and optimism to the Korean army and people who are making efforts to open up a new era of prosperity.
