On October 17, 1926 when he held a meeting to form the Down-with-Imperialism Union (DIU), President Kim Il Sung said that, in view of historical lessons drawn from the anti-Japanese struggle of the Korean people, it was necessary to defeat Japanese imperialism and achieve genuine independence of the country not by relying on strength of a few elite people but through the mass movement, not by depending on any foreign forces but by the Korean people’s own efforts.

Thanks to the independent spirit put forward by the DIU, the Workers’ Party of Korea could be able to make not only the founding of the Party but the whole course of its development consistent with independence and demonstrate dignity and might of being a revolutionary party that is victorious with the banner of independence.
