During the visit to the Eastern Europe in 1956, President Kim Il Sung was advised by the heads of different states to join the CMEA in order to rehabilitate the ruined economy as soon as possible.

The heads of member states of the CMEA who were leaning on the help of the former USSR in the economic construction called upon the President to join the CMEA by insisting that it would require much cost and be unprofitable for the DPRK to manufacture machinery and equipment by its own efforts and that a country may export necessary machinery to the DPRK according to contract in case the latter supplies iron ore abundant in it.

Maintaining logically the necessity of the self-supporting economy, the President expressed his resolute standpoint to the great-power chauvinists as follows.

The DPRK had to provide the member states of the CMEA with raw materials in case the former joined the international division of labour as long as the former had no machine industry and, accordingly, the former would have only empty tunnels and beg other country for help all the time.

The President declared that we know which road we should take.
