Kim Jong Il always regards it as his motto to worship the popular masses as a great teacher and serve them.

    President Kim Il Sung said.

“He(Kim Jong Il ) always goes out among the people, shares weal and woe with them and spares nothing for their happiness.”

It was when Wasandong-Ryongsong road was under expansion in Pyongyang, capital of the DPRK.

Kim Jong Il who took part in the expansion project in Kim Il Sung University days threw his energies into hard works and led the students with his practical example from the first day of the project.

One day when the project was under way, a grandmother appeared at the mouth of the workplace with a fire shovel and an empty bucket. She came to dig out coal which might be at the site of old buildings.

Kim Jong Il asked her with a smile if she had run out of coal in her house, approaching her.

She answered she came not because she had not run out of coal but because it was a waste for precious coal to be buried untouched under the ground.

Having heard of her, Kim Jong Il told the students that we could not leave precious coal buried even though it was a small amount and that we should learn from the people also in the attitude towards coal.

Kim Jong Il personally put coal into the grandmother’s bucket and climbed the uphill to her house with it in his hand.

At that time a student told Kim Jong Il that he would bring the bucket to her house and received it from him.

Kim Jong Il told her that he wanted to bring it for her, but he required the student to help her as he was busy and said goodbye to her kindly.

The student silently tipped off, in a low voice, the grandmother who was so much moved by his modest disposition, that the very man who had just helped her was the son of President Kim Il Sung.

She hurried back to Kim Jong Il and thanked him in a shaky voice with deep emotion.

Kim Jong Il took her hands with his and told her that he is also the son of the working people and he would hesitate nothing for them. He also said that working for the people is the most wonderful work in the world.

She highly praised Kim Jong Il that he is the working people’s son who was born for them and devotes his all for them, repeatedly talking about her deep emotion of the day.

Kim Jong Il, the son of the people, is devoting himself for them still today.
