Democratic Election Law System Established in DPRK

    The democratic election law system in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was established by enacting and enforcing the laws related to the election of deputies to the local and central power organs.

    These election laws comprehensively regulate all norms for democratic election such as fundamental principle of election and procedures of listing voters, installing constituency and sub-constituency, nominating candidate, electing and confirming election result.

    Principles of democratic election, made in the method of universal, equal and direct suffrage by secrete ballot were legalized and biggest consideration was made to promote the people’s conveniences--this is the important characteristic of these laws.

    Thanks to these election laws, 99.6% among all voters participated in the election of local power organs held for the first time after Korea’s liberation. 237 delegates from all walks of life including 34 women, 7 businessmen, 10 merchants, 4 handicraftsmen and 10 men of religion were elected the deputies to the central power organ in February 1947.

    Representatives from all walks of life were elected deputies and broad masses of the people participated in election and voted for their representatives. This is the vivid manifestation of the fact that the election laws, enacted and enforced in the DPRK, were the democratic ones which reflected correctly the people’s demands to exercise political rights through election.

    Thanks to establishment of the election law system, the people in the DPRK have steady legal guarantee capable of exercising their political rights and enjoying freedom to their hearts’ contents with sovereignty in their hands.
